Ice. Movement. Fundamentals.

This clinic introduces climbers with a rock or indoor background to ice climbing. Focused on safety, efficient movement, and progression on low-angle ice, the day combines guided instruction and hands-on practice to build confidence and develop a solid foundation in a real alpine environment.

Educational goals

Build a strong foundation in ice climbing by developing safe and efficient movement on ice. Learn to assess environmental conditions, understand and use ice climbing equipment correctly, and progress confidently on low-angle ice. The clinic focuses on technical awareness, balance, and controlled progression, providing the skills needed to move safely and effectively in an alpine ice environment.

What to bring

Ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet are required for this clinic. Participants may bring their own equipment if they have it. Technical equipment rental is not available for this clinic, please let us know if you need equipment during checkout.


Clothing & personal gear
  • Warm beanie

  • Neck gaiter

  • Thermal base layer

  • Fleece or midlayer

  • Insulated jacket

  • Waterproof shell (waterproof overpants recommended)

  • Extra t-shirt or thermal layer

  • Thermal leggings

  • Insulated pants

  • Warm socks


Hands & feet
  • Two pairs of warm gloves

  • Waterproof mountaineering boots (ideally semi-crampon or crampon compatible)


Backpack & accessories
  • 32–40 L backpack (must fit personal gear, ice tools, crampons, and part of the group gear)

  • Sunglasses

  • Trekking poles for the approach

Headlamp (recommended, not mandatory)


Food & hydration
  • Thermos with hot drink (approx. 1 liter)

  • Snacks, energy bars, or packed lunch

Level

This clinic is designed for climbers with prior indoor or rock climbing experience who want to transition to ice climbing. No previous ice climbing experience is required. Participants should be comfortable with basic rope systems and spend a full day outdoors in winter conditions. The focus is on learning fundamental techniques, safety awareness, and controlled progression on ice in a supportive alpine environment.


A member of the weAltura media team will join the clinic to document the experience. Photos will be taken throughout the day and shared with participants after the event via a private download link. Selected images may also be used on weAltura’s social channels.
