This 2 day Avalanche Safety Training for Ski Touring & Freeride takes place in the Mont Blanc area, Aosta Valley, and is designed for beginners in ski touring and off-piste skiing, confident on red and black slopes, moving on easy, non-technical alpine terrain.

The experience combines ski touring ascents on skins with freeride descents, focusing on terrain evaluation, avalanche awareness, and safe group decision-making. Participants learn to interpret avalanche bulletins, assess snow conditions, and apply effective companion rescue techniques using transceiver, probe, and shovel.

Educational goals

Build a solid foundation in avalanche safety by developing awareness, decision-making, and effective companion rescue skills in the backcountry. Learn to assess terrain and snow conditions during ski touring ascents on skins and apply safe strategies during freeride descents. The training focuses on risk evaluation, group management, and correct use of avalanche safety equipment, providing the skills needed to move consciously and safely in ski touring and freeride environments.

What to bring

Mandatory safety equipment

  • Avalanche transceiver

  • Shovel

  • Probe

(If needed, safety kits including transceiver, shovel, and probe can be provided on request.)


Ski touring equipment

  • Ski touring skis

  • Poles

  • Climbing skins

  • Ski crampons or ski blades

  • Ski touring boots

  • Backpack (approx. 30 L)


Clothing

  • Waterproof shell jacket (Gore-Tex® or equivalent)

  • Insulating mid-layer

  • Windproof or softshell layer

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (2 sets recommended)

  • Breathable technical T-shirt(s)

  • Ski pants

  • Warm ski gloves

  • Light backup gloves (1 extra pair)

  • Wool hat or insulated beanie

  • Balaclava or neck gaiter (buff)

  • Ski socks (2 pairs)

  • Sunglasses


Personal items

  • Water bottle (minimum 1 L) or thermos

  • Energy bars, snacks, or dried fruit

  • Sunscreen and lip balm (UV protection)


Important notes

  • All participants must check their equipment in advance to ensure it is in good working condition.

  • For ski touring gear rental, please inform us at the time of booking: we will provide a list of rental shops in the Aosta Valley / Courmayeur area


Level

Accessible alpine terrain suitable for beginners in ski touring and off-piste skiing. Ascents take place on easy, non-technical slopes, while descents are on open snow-covered terrain up to 35°. Participants should be comfortable skiing red and black slopes. No technical mountaineering or climbing skills required.


A member of the weAltura media team will join the clinic to document the experience. Photos will be taken throughout the day and shared with participants after the event via a private download link. Selected images may also be used on weAltura’s social channels.

Additional costs

  • Research and rescue insurance with UVGAM coverage (recommended): €5 per person (3 days)

  • Lift passes and use of lift facilities

  • Mountain Guide’s expenses (lifts, transfers, meals, accommodation)

  • Personal transfers, meals, and accommodation

  • Rental of ski touring equipment (if needed)

  • Any service or expense not listed under “What’s included”
